Glass That Swings Like A Door

The Arc Gets Mapped
A door that swings has to have room to swing into. At the measure we open the arc with a tape and walk it past the vanity, the toilet, the towel bar and the doorway you came in through. If it clips something, we say so standing right there and talk about a narrower panel, a different hinge side, or a pivot instead.

Wall hinges bolt into solid blocking and hang the door off the wall or off a fixed panel beside it. A pivot spins on a point set into the header and another in the curb, and it will carry a wider, heavier sheet of glass. Which one you get depends on the opening and where the weight has to land.
No Track Underfoot
The bottom of a hinged door is open floor. There is no aluminum channel to step over, no corner where soap packs in behind a roller, and nothing standing between the water and the drain. On a low-curb shower that clean threshold is most of the reason people ask for this door in the first place.
What We Check Before The Glass Is Cut
Plumb comes first. A hinged door hangs on its hardware, so if the wall it hangs from leans, the door will drift open or creep closed on its own and no amount of adjusting at the end will talk it out of that. We put a level on the wall, check the curb, and template the opening down to the sixteenth before anything gets cut. Then we settle the hinge side. Which way the door wants to open is usually decided by the room rather than by preference, and the answer changes more often than people expect once somebody stands in the doorway and swings an arm through the space. Handle placement, the clear sweep along the bottom, and the seal on the closing edge all get set from that one decision.
Then there is our water. Metro Detroit runs hard, and one uninterrupted panel of glass is the most honest surface in the house about it. Mineral shows up as a haze across the middle of the door long before it shows anywhere else. A squeegee parked on the hinge side handles most of it, and easy-clean glass is worth asking about if nobody in the house is realistically going to be the squeegee person. Hardware matters here too, because the hinges and the pivot live right in the spray. Does a hinged door hold up better to hard water?
It gives mineral fewer places to hide. There is no track, no roller housing and no overlap between two panels, so the only real surfaces are the glass and the hardware. It will still haze over if it never gets wiped, because the water is hard everywhere in the metro. Squeegee it after showers, and ask us about easy-clean glass while we have the tape out.
