A Swinging Door Needs Somewhere To Go
A hinged door is one solid panel of glass that opens on hardware instead of riding in a track. You push it and it swings, the same way the door to any other room swings. That is the whole appeal. There is no bottom channel collecting grit and soap film, nothing to step over on your way in, and the opening you get is the full width of the panel rather than half of it. What the door asks for in return is room. The glass has to travel somewhere when it opens, and that arc has to clear everything standing in the bathroom. So before anyone talks about glass texture or hardware finish, the honest first question on a swing door is whether your bathroom has the space to let it swing. Most do. Some do not, and it is a lot better to know that on measure day.
That is what the free in-home measure is really for. If the panel clears all of it with room left over, a hinged door is the right call. If it does not, you find that out at the measure and not on install day.

Wall-mount hinges hang the panel off the wall or off a fixed piece of glass, which covers most standard walk-in openings. A pivot turns on a point at the top and another at the bottom, so it will carry a wider and heavier panel than hinges will. Your opening decides which one you get, not a catalog.
No Bottom Track
Nothing runs along the floor of the opening. No channel to step over, no channel to scrub out, no channel holding water and soap after every shower. The threshold stays open and the tile you paid for stays visible. It is the cleanest thing about this style and usually the first thing people notice.

There is no single number to quote you, because it depends on how wide the panel is and where the hinges land. We work it out standing in your bathroom with a tape, before any glass gets cut.
What is the difference between hinges and a pivot?
Hinges mount to the wall or to a fixed panel of glass, and the door swings off that edge. A pivot turns on one point at the top and another at the bottom, so the load runs straight down and the hardware will carry a wider, heavier piece of glass. Hinges handle most standard openings just fine. A pivot is the answer when the opening is wide.
Does the door swing into the room or into the shower?
Into the room. Hanging it that way keeps the wet side of the glass facing the pan as the door opens, so the water still clinging to it runs back toward the drain instead of onto your bathroom floor. It is also easier to step out of. The tradeoff is that the arc has to live in the room, which is exactly why we check it first.
Can a hinged door work on a tub opening?
It can. A tub alcove will take a hinged glass panel set on the deck, and plenty of Utica bathrooms are laid out that way.
