A remodel you are living through has a rhythm to it. Demolition, plumbing rough, waterproofing, tile, grout, and then the room sits while everything cures. Glass comes last, because the enclosure is cut to finished walls and there are no finished walls until the tile setter is done. That order is not negotiable, so your only real lever is when you start the conversation. Start early and the glass follows the tile. Start after the tile and the room waits on you.
Early also means the choices get made while other work is still happening instead of after everything stops. Glass, hardware finish, which way the door opens. If the tile, the curb and the tub are staying and only the enclosure is changing, that is shower door replacement, a smaller project that does not need a tile setter at all. Then there is who is actually running the job. Sometimes it is a general contractor, sometimes a tile setter working direct, sometimes you and a cousin who does drywall. The Old One Leaves With Us
Where there is an existing enclosure, it comes out and goes with our crew: glass, frame, track and all. Nobody ends up with an old door leaning against the garage wall waiting on bulk pickup, and the bathroom is left clean rather than left as a staging area.
The Things That Actually Hold Up A Remodel Install
Two of them, mostly. The first is a wall that went in out of plumb and nobody said anything. That is not a dealbreaker, and glass gets built to walls that are out of plumb all the time, but it has to be seen at the measure, not discovered with a panel already in the room. The second is a change made after the measure. A curb rebuilt, a wall furred out, tile added on a return: all of those move the numbers, and glass does not get trimmed on site.
The rest is smaller and easier. Decide before the measure how the door should open, because that is a room decision more than a glass one. If the bathroom is tight, or the opening sits over a tub, sliding shower doors keep everything inside the footprint, while framed shower doors suit a straightforward alcove where the frame is doing useful work. Walk the room with the door imaginary and open, and check it against the vanity, the toilet and the towel bar you have not hung yet.

My tile goes in next week. When should I call?
Now for the conversation, and book the measure for after the grout is in. Calling early costs nothing and gets the glass, the finish and the way the door opens settled while the room is still being worked on. Calling once everything else is finished just leaves the bathroom waiting on decisions.
Can I order the glass now so it lands the day the tile is done?
No. Every enclosure is cut to the opening as it finally exists, and board, mud, tile and grout all change those numbers. Ordering off pre-tile dimensions is how a door ends up with a gap at one jamb and a bind at the other. Measure follows tile, and fabrication follows the measure.
Do I need to be home for the measure and for the install?
For the measure, yes, or somebody who can make decisions. That visit is where glass, finish and the way the door opens get talked through, and questions come up that only the person living there can answer. For the install we mainly need bathroom access and a clear path to carry panels in.
I am keeping my tile and my tub. Is that a different job?
It is a smaller one. When the tile, the curb and the tub are sound, we measure the opening as it stands, build to it, take the old enclosure out and set new glass in the same place. No tile work, no plumbing work, and nothing torn apart to get a new door in.
How long will my bathroom be out of service?
That is driven mostly by the other trades and by how quickly choices get made. Once we have measured and you have picked glass and finish, you get a timeline for your job instead of a guess. What is certain is that the glass step starts when tile is finished, so a slipping tile date moves everything behind it.
Do you handle the tile, the pan or the plumbing?
No. Demolition, plumbing, waterproofing and tile are other trades' work and they all come first. We measure the finished opening, fabricate the glass in our own Sterling Heights shop, take the old enclosure out and install the new one.
