What Frameless Glass Does To A Room

Frameless means what it says. There is no aluminum surround holding the panels together, so the glass itself does the work, which is why it has to be thick. Our standard is 3/8 inch tempered, heavy enough to hang straight and stay quiet when you close it. What you notice first is the light. A framed enclosure draws a hard metal box around your shower and visually cuts the room in half. Take that box away and a Pontiac bathroom that felt cramped starts reading as one continuous space. That matters in the newer subdivisions out toward the edges of town, where the primary bath was designed around a walk-in shower and deserves to be seen. It matters just as much in an older house closer to downtown, where every inch of visual room you can borrow back is worth having.

None of that works without an honest measure. Walls are almost never plumb, and in Pontiac you are often working in a house that has been standing a long time and has settled into its own shape. A tile wall can lean a quarter inch over its height and still look perfectly straight to the eye. Frameless glass has no frame to hide that, so we come out, put a level on your actual walls, and record what is really there before a single panel is cut. Metro Detroit water is hard, and hard water is rough on glass. Minerals dry on the surface and, left alone long enough, they etch into it. We will show you easy-clean glass and talk honestly about how much upkeep each option asks of you. The measure is free, at your house, with no pressure to decide anything that day.

What we build

Frameless Shower Doors, measured and built for Pontiac.

01

Thick Tempered Glass

With no frame carrying the load, the panel has to be strong on its own. We use 3/8 inch tempered as our standard heavy glass. It has real weight in your hand, it does not flex or rattle in the opening, and tempering means it breaks into blunt pieces instead of shards.

02

Hardware Does The Work

A frameless door hangs on a short list of parts, so those parts matter. Hinges and clips have to be anchored into solid backing and set square, or the panel will drift out of alignment over time. We locate the blocking, set the hardware properly, and check the swing before we pack up.

03

Cut To Your Walls

Nothing about this is a stock size. Once we have your numbers, the glass is fabricated for your opening, with every notch and hole drilled before tempering, because tempered glass cannot be cut afterward. That is why the measure has to be right the first time, and why we take it ourselves.

How it goes

One Family From Measure To Install

You are not really buying glass. You are buying whoever hangs it. We keep the whole job in the family, so the same people who measured your bathroom fabricate the panels and come back to set them. Nothing gets handed off to an outside glass shop that never saw your room. When a shim is needed, or a wall turns out to be further out of plumb than expected, the person solving it is the person who took the measurement, and that is a much shorter conversation. Pontiac sits about thirteen miles west of our Sterling Heights showroom, an easy run for us. Coming back out is not a problem, and you should not have to chase anybody down to get your shower finished.

Start with the free in-home measure. We look at the opening, the floor, the threshold, and how you actually use the room, then talk through what is realistic. If you would rather see glass and metal in person first, the showroom at 42624 Van Dyke Ave is open Mon-Fri 9-5 and Sat 10-2. Bring photos on your phone, bring a tile sample, bring whoever else has an opinion. Clear, low-iron, frosted and rain-textured glass are all on the table, and hardware comes in matte black, brushed gold, chrome and nickel among other options. Ask about the full range while you are standing there. There is no pressure and no obligation to decide on the spot.

Good Questions

Common questions.

Do you install frameless shower doors in Pontiac?

Yes. Our showroom is at 42624 Van Dyke Ave in Sterling Heights, about thirteen miles east of Pontiac, and we install throughout Oakland County. Start with the free in-home measure. We come to your bathroom, take the numbers off your real walls, and bring glass and hardware samples with us. Call (586) 315-8900 or text (586) 800-9481 to get on the schedule.

Why does frameless glass have to be so thick?

Because there is no frame doing the structural work. A thin panel in a frameless setup would flex, sag on the hinge side, and feel cheap every time you touched it. Our standard heavy glass is 3/8 inch tempered. The thickness keeps the panel rigid so it hangs true, and the tempering is what makes glass of that size safe in a bathroom.

My Pontiac house is old and nothing is square. Is frameless still an option?

Usually, yes. Walls that are out of plumb are the normal condition around here, not the exception, especially in the established neighborhoods closer to downtown and the lakes. We measure the opening at several heights instead of assuming it is a clean rectangle, fabricate to what is actually there, and set the hardware to take up the difference. That is the whole reason we insist on measuring in person.

Will hard water ruin the glass?

Metro Detroit water carries a lot of minerals, and those minerals are what leave the cloudy film on shower glass. Left long enough they etch the surface, and at that point no cleaner brings it back. Easy-clean glass is available and it makes a real difference. Beyond that, a squeegee hanging inside the shower and ten seconds of wiping beats anything on the store shelf.

How much of the job happens on install day?

Less than you would think. The measure, the fabrication, the drilling and the tempering all happen before we show up. Install day is our own crew setting the hardware, hanging the panels, sealing what needs sealing, checking the swing, and cleaning up after themselves. We will give you a firm timeline for the whole project once we have measured your bathroom.
