Here is the honest scope. We build and set the glass. The steam generator, the plumbing that feeds it, and the tile and waterproofing that make the room vapor-tight are handled by other trades. That is not us dodging work, it is how the trade is divided, and a glass shop telling you otherwise should worry you. What we do is come out, measure the finished opening including the exact ceiling height and whether that ceiling is level across the span, then fabricate a door and transom package that closes the box. We coordinate with whoever is doing the tile so the sequencing works. In a Michigan winter a steam shower earns its keep, and the glass is worth building properly the first time.

Full Height To Ceiling
Steam rises and collects at the top, so the enclosure cannot stop short at seven feet. We run the glass to the ceiling with a fixed transom above the door. That upper panel is what keeps the heat inside the box instead of letting it drift out over the top and into the rest of the bathroom.
Tight Door Tolerances
A steam door is fitted with minimal gap and real seals along its edges. It should close with a soft, definite feel rather than swing loose. Getting that right depends on a square opening and precise hardware placement, which is why the measure matters even more here than it does on a standard enclosure.
Header And Seal Detail
The header ties the panels together and gives the transom something solid to sit against. Seals, sweeps and the joints between panels all have to work as one system. Leave any single one of them sloppy and the enclosure bleeds steam. We detail all of it, then check the door and the closure before we leave.
What We Build And What We Do Not
Being clear about this saves everybody time. Fortune measures, fabricates and installs the glass: the panels, the transom, the header, the door, the hardware and the seals. We do not do tile, we do not do plumbing, and the steam generator itself belongs to another trade entirely. Those pieces go to your tile setter, your plumber and whoever supplies the unit. The waterproofing behind and under the tile is the single most important part of a steam shower, and it has to be done right by the trade that owns it. Once those pieces are handled, our glass closes the enclosure and holds the steam where you want it.
Sequencing is where steam projects go sideways. We need the tile finished and the ceiling in its final state before we take measurements, because the transom is cut to a real ceiling height and ceilings are rarely dead level across an opening. We measure that variation and build for it. Then the glass is fabricated with every hole drilled before tempering, and our crew comes back to set it. Do you install the steam generator?
No. The generator, its wiring and the plumbing that feeds it belong to other trades, and so do the tile and the waterproofing. Our scope is the glass: the panels, the transom, the header, the door, the hardware and the seals. We work alongside those trades regularly and can coordinate the timing so nothing on the job gets held up.
Why does a steam enclosure need a transom panel?
Because steam collects at the top of the room. If the glass stops below the ceiling, the heat you paid to generate escapes over the top of the door and the shower never reaches temperature. A fixed transom closes that gap and turns the enclosure into a sealed box. It is not a decorative detail. It is the reason the whole thing works.
Can an existing shower be made into a steam shower?
That question goes to your tile and plumbing trades first, because the enclosure has to be waterproofed for vapor and the generator has to be fed. Most existing showers were not built with that in mind. Once those trades have made the space steam-ready and the ceiling is finished, we can measure and build the full-height glass that closes it in.
Is hard water worse in a steam shower?
Metro Detroit water is mineral heavy, and steam leaves those minerals on the glass as it condenses and dries. You will see it if you let it sit. Easy-clean glass is available and is worth asking about on a steam enclosure in particular. Running the fan afterward and giving the panels a quick squeegee keeps the glass looking like it did on day one.
