Clearance Comes Before Glass
A hinged shower door is one piece of glass carried on hardware. You push it and it swings, the same as the door to any other room. Nothing rides in a channel at the floor, which means no raised lip in your way when you step in and no groove down there for grit and soap scum to settle into. And the doorway you walk through is as wide as the panel itself, not the half opening a slider leaves you. The catch is plain physics. When that panel opens it has to go somewhere, and whatever is already standing in your bathroom either lets it or does not. So on a swing door the first honest question is not which glass you want. It is whether the room will let the door move. Plenty of Lake Orion bathrooms will. Some will not, and that is worth learning early.
Sorting that out is the real job of the free in-home measure. We come up from Sterling Heights, about sixteen miles by way of M-24 or the I-75 corridor, and put a tape on the opening you actually have. Then we stand in the room and follow the panel through its travel. Where does the leading edge sit when the door is halfway open? Is it clear of the vanity, the toilet, the towel bar, and the walkway back out to the hall? We hang these to open outward, so the soaked side of the panel is still turned toward the pan while the door is in motion and what runs off it lands in the shower. Opening outward also puts the arc in the room, which is where the obstacles live. If the clearance is not there, you hear it from us that day, standing right in the doorway with us. Then we build the glass in house and our own crew sets it.

We Walk The Arc
We move the panel through your bathroom before it exists in glass. The corner of the vanity, the toilet, the doorway out to the hall, the towel bar hanging beside the shower. Clear all of that with room to spare and a hinged door is the right call for you. Fall short and you hear it on measure day.
Hinge Or Pivot
Hinges bolt to the wall or to a fixed piece of glass and the door swings off that edge. That is the usual answer for a standard walk-in. A pivot rides on one point up top and another at the floor, sending the load straight down the panel, so it will hold a wider and heavier piece of glass. Your opening decides.
No Rail Underfoot
There is no rail along the floor of the opening. Nothing to clear with your foot in the dark, nothing to run a brush through on cleaning day, no shallow trough holding water and soap after every shower. Your threshold stays open and your tile stays in view. It is usually the first thing people notice.
Swing Room in Lake Orion Baths
Lake Orion is not one kind of house, and you know it the second you walk into the bathroom. The older streets close to downtown and the lakeside homes near the village tend to have compact baths where every square foot already has a job, and a renovated cottage by the water can be tighter yet. Hardware matters more on a swing door than on anything else we build. It is holding a heavy panel, and it is also where your eye lands, because there is no frame around the glass to look at instead. Matte black reads sharp. Chrome and nickel stay bright and stay quiet. Brushed gold warms a room up. The list runs longer than those, so ask about the full range, and have a picture of your faucet handy when we come out. Standard heavy glass with us is 3/8 inch tempered, and that heft is exactly what makes a swinging panel feel solid rather than flimsy on the close. The water up here is hard, same as everywhere else in Metro Detroit, and hard water leaves mineral behind on glass. You will get the honest version from us on easy-clean glass, and on running a cloth over the hinges now and then, since that is where mineral likes to settle.

How much room does a swinging panel need?
Enough that the leaf can sweep its full path and brush nothing on the way. Nobody can give you one measurement that covers it, because it moves with the width of the door, the jamb the hardware sits on, and whatever fixtures are standing close by. We settle it with a tape in your own bathroom, before a piece of glass is cut, so there are no surprises on install day.
Which way should the door swing?
Outward. Hung that way, the soaked face of the panel stays turned toward the pan while it moves, so the drips land inside the shower and head for the drain. It is an easier step out, too. What it costs you is the arc, which then has to fit in the bathroom. In a tight Lake Orion bath that trade is the whole decision.
Hinges or a pivot on a wide opening?
A pivot, most of the time. Hinges mount to the wall or to a fixed panel and the door turns off that edge, which handles a standard walk-in without complaint. A pivot carries the leaf on a single point above and below, dropping the weight straight through the glass, so the hardware will take a wider and heavier panel than a hinge set will. Your opening tells us which.
Will a hinged door work over a tub?
It can. A hinged panel will sit on a tub deck inside an alcove, and a fair number of Lake Orion baths are laid out exactly like that. Clearance still rules the decision. Because the swing starts up at deck height instead of the floor, the vanity top and anything hanging on the wall count for more, not less.
