Glass That Actually Holds The Steam
A steam shower is a different piece of glass work than a regular enclosure, and the difference lives at the top. A normal enclosure is open above the door on purpose. It lets the space breathe and it makes panel heights forgiving. Steam does not cooperate with that. It rises, it finds the largest opening available, and it leaves. Put a standard enclosure on a steam shower and you get a foggy bathroom, a warm mirror and a shower that never quite gets where you wanted it. Steam glass runs full height instead. A transom panel closes the space between the door head and the ceiling, the header is sealed, and the door carries seals on every edge rather than just the strike side. The enclosure becomes a closed room made of glass.
That is a harder build and the tolerances are tighter because of it. There is no slack at the ceiling. The panel has to land on tile that runs all the way up, the header has to sit level across the full width, and the door has to close against seals that are only forgiving by a hair. It is worth doing right. Michigan winters are long, and a steam shower is one of the few upgrades in a house that people genuinely use every day once it is in. Most of the steam work we see around Lake Orion comes up during a full bath remodel, usually a master suite in one of the newer subdivision homes where the footprint and the ceiling height are both there to make it work.

Transom To The Ceiling
A fixed transom panel closes the gap above the door so the steam has nowhere to escape. It is cut to your ceiling, which is why the measure has to wait until the tile is up there. If you want an openable vent panel at the top to clear the room when you are done, raise it early and we will plan for it.
Seals And Header Detail
The header spans the top of the opening and has to sit level across all of it. The door gets seals at the jamb, the strike and the head, plus a sweep along the bottom. Each one is a small piece, and together they are the difference between a sealed enclosure and a warm bathroom with a mirror you cannot see through.

We measure the opening, build the enclosure and set the panels. The steam generator, its plumbing and its electrical are other trades, and so are the tile and the waterproofing behind it. We say that before you book, because the glass has to go in last and knowing the order keeps your project from stalling out at the end.
Our Scope, And What The Other Trades Handle
Being clear about scope is not a caveat, it is how a steam project stays on schedule. Fortune does not do tile, plumbing or steam generator work. Those are separate trades with their own licensing and their own sequencing, and a glass shop that tells you otherwise is a glass shop worth asking more questions of. What we do is the enclosure: the measure, the fabrication and the setting of the panels. That covers the transom, the header, the door, the seals and the hardware. It is the last thing that goes into a steam shower and it is the piece everybody sees and touches every day, so it gets the attention that deserves. Everything ahead of it has to be finished before our part can start, which is why we ask about your timeline on the first call.
Here is what makes our part go smoothly. Tile needs to run to the ceiling inside the enclosure and it needs to be done before we measure, because we measure against the surface the glass will actually touch. The curb wants to be level and pitched in. There has to be solid backing behind the tile where the hinges and the header anchor, and that decision gets made long before we show up, so a call early in the project is worth more than a call at the end. Why does the glass have to run to the ceiling?
Steam rises and leaves through the biggest gap it can find. A standard enclosure is open at the top on purpose, so a steam shower built behind one pushes most of its steam into the bathroom and onto the mirror instead of keeping it where you are sitting. Closing the top with a transom panel and a sealed header is what holds the heat inside the enclosure.
Can the door still be opened normally?
Yes. The door hangs and swings the way any glass shower door does. What changes is the detail around it: seals at the edges, a sweep at the bottom, and a header above that closes the gap up to the transom. A vent detail near the top is worth discussing too, since it gives you a way to let the steam out when you are finished.
Does hard water hit a steam enclosure harder?
It gets more chances at it. A steam shower wets every square inch of glass, all the way up, and Metro Detroit minerals stay behind each time that water dries. Squeegee what you can reach, run the bath fan afterward, and ask about easy-clean glass while you are picking samples. None of that softens the water, but it does make the routine a lot shorter.
