The Middle Ground Between Framed And Frameless

There are really three ways to close in a shower with glass, and most people only know two of them. A framed enclosure wraps metal around every panel edge, including the edge of the door you put your hand on. It is sturdy and it is what fills most builder grade bathrooms, but all that aluminum reads as hardware first and glass second. Fully frameless goes the other direction. Heavy 3/8 inch tempered panels, a few pieces of hardware, nothing else. Semi-frameless sits between them, and it is not a watered down version of either one. It keeps a slim channel where the glass meets your walls and the sill, then takes the metal off the door edge and the vertical seams where you actually look. Stand in front of one and it reads as glass. Stand beside it and you can see the thin line of aluminum earning its keep.

That is the value case and it is an honest one. You get the look where it shows, and you let a small amount of metal do structural work where it does not. In a Lake Orion house where the master bath is getting the full treatment and the hall bath still has to survive a family, plenty of people end up with frameless in one room and semi-frameless in the other. Nobody feels shortchanged walking into the hall bath. It also suits older houses well. Homes on the streets closer to downtown have moved a little over the decades, and a slim perimeter channel gives an out of plumb wall somewhere to disappear instead of leaving a bead of caulk to do a job it was never meant to do.

What we build

Semi-Frameless Shower Doors, measured and built for Lake Orion.

01

Where The Metal Sits

The channel runs where the enclosure meets your walls and the sill. That is the extent of it. The swinging edge of the door and the vertical seam between panels stay bare glass, which is exactly where your eye lands when you walk into the room. The frame does its work at the perimeter, out of the way.

02

Forgiving On Older Walls

Tile is rarely dead plumb and houses settle. A perimeter channel gives that variation somewhere to go, so the enclosure lines up without a fat bead of silicone trying to cover a gap. On an older Lake Orion bath that has already been updated once or twice, that flexibility shows up in how clean the finished job looks.

03

Fewer Places For Scale

Hard water leaves minerals in every channel it can reach, and a fully framed enclosure has a channel on all four sides of every panel. Semi-frameless cuts that back to the perimeter. There is still a track to keep clean along the bottom, but there is far less of it, and the door edge itself is just glass.

How it goes

Where Semi-Frameless Makes The Most Sense

Sometimes semi-frameless is not the compromise, it is the right call. Frameless hardware has to anchor into something solid, and on a wall with no blocking behind the tile where a hinge wants to land, a perimeter channel spreads the load along the whole edge instead of concentrating it at two points. Tall openings behave better with support at the jambs. Openings that are noticeably out of square finish cleaner with a channel than with a panel scribed to a wavy wall. Over a tub, a slim frame at the deck gives you a defined edge to seal against. We look at all of that during the measure and tell you what your opening wants. You get the reasoning, not a pitch.

The rest of it comes down to how the room gets used. A bath that four people cycle through on a school morning takes abuse a master suite never sees, and a door with a defined frame at the jamb shrugs that off. Lake Orion has a lot of houses in exactly that shape, from the subdivision colonials that filled in along Baldwin and out toward Joslyn and Indianwood to the smaller places nearer the village. We build the enclosure in our own shop to your dimensions, load it, and drive it out to you. The same family that took the numbers sets the panels, so if anything on the wall has changed since the measure, the person standing in your bathroom already knows it.

Good Questions

Common questions.

Do you install semi-frameless shower doors in Lake Orion?

Yes, all through Oakland County. Our showroom sits at 42624 Van Dyke Ave in Sterling Heights, about 16 miles from Lake Orion by way of M-24 or the I-75 corridor. Call (586) 315-8900 or text (586) 800-9481 and we will schedule a free in-home measure, bring samples of the glass and the finishes, and quote your opening with no obligation.

How is semi-frameless different from a framed door?

A framed enclosure wraps metal around every edge of every panel, including the swinging edge of the door. Semi-frameless keeps a slim channel where the enclosure meets the wall and the sill, then leaves the door edges bare. From the front it reads much closer to frameless. From the side you can still see the thin line of metal doing the structural work.

Does the metal have to match my faucet?

It does not have to, though most people want it to. Matte black, brushed gold, chrome and nickel are all offered, and there is more than that on the wall in the showroom, so ask about the full range. Bring a photo of your fixtures or text one to (586) 800-9481 and we will pull samples to set beside it before you decide anything.

Is the glass different from a frameless enclosure?

The frame is the real difference, not the look of the glass. In a semi-frameless unit the perimeter channel carries load that hinges and clips would otherwise carry alone, so the hardware footprint on your wall is smaller. Our standard heavy glass is 3/8 inch tempered. We will tell you exactly what your opening calls for once we have measured it.

How long does it take from measure to install?

Most jobs run from the in-home measure to the install in a few weeks, because we cut and temper the glass ourselves instead of waiting on an outside supplier to ship a panel across the state. Your exact timeline gets confirmed once the glass and the finish are picked, since that is when the enclosure goes into fabrication. You get a straight answer, not a maybe.
