Why not just buy a shower door and have someone install it?
Because a boxed door is built for an opening that does not exist in your house. Walls lean, tile thickness varies, and thresholds are rarely dead level. A stock unit either forces its way in or leaves a gap at the top or the bottom that you notice every day. Do you install glass in showers you did not build?
Yes. Most of what we do goes into a shower somebody else built, whether it came with the house or came out of a recent bath project. We do not do tile or plumbing work ourselves, so if your tile is still going in, we usually measure once the surface is finished, since that finished surface is what the glass has to meet.
How thick is the glass, and is it safe?
Standard for us is 3/8 inch tempered heavy glass. Tempering is a heat treatment that makes glass far stronger than ordinary glass and changes the way it behaves if it ever does break, which is the safety standard for a bathroom. The 3/8 inch thickness is also why the panels hang straight and feel solid instead of flexing when you pull the door open.
What if my walls are badly out of plumb?
That is common, and it is not a problem so much as information. We find it at the measure instead of on install day. Depending on how far off the walls run, the answer might be a different hardware approach or a channel that takes up the difference so the glass still sits true. Either way you hear what we found while we are standing in the room, before anything is ordered.
